Trucking Industry News

Truck Driver Shortage Hits Canada

It looks like the truck driver shortage is now big news for our friends to the north. The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association (APTA) has even formed a "Driver Shortage Blue Ribbon Task Force" to come up with ideas to help fix the driver shortage.

According to Today's Trucking:

"GW Driver Training is planning on upgrading its services and facilities in order to address the truck driver shortage crisis in New Brunswick, and the first step to the initiative is a change of name, to CollegeTrans-Canada College."

The article goes on to state that:

"By 2020, there may be as many as 24,700 unfilled truck driver positions across Canada if current trends are not reversed, according to the Conference Board of Canada ... We will be modernizing and upgrading our facilities and services in order to meet the growing needs of New Brunswick's trucking industry."

While those numbers may seem like just a drop in the bucket compared to what we are dealing with here in the states, any news that helps to highlight the shortage is good for truckers everywhere. Now that it is becoming an International issue, perhaps our regulators will start to look for real solutions that actually affect driver safety without sacrificing driver pay.
